Purpose:  To notify Field Offices of estimated costs associated with reclaiming soil quality in flood damaged fields.

Expiration Date:  September 30, 2008.

Indiana Guide Sheets - Soil Quality Reclamation for Spring Flood Damaged Fields and Cover Crops to Reclaim Soil Quality in Flood Damaged Fields were recently issued via Indiana Bulletin Nos. 450-8-1 and 450-8-2 to assist producers and planners to assess flood damages to cropland fields, and provide a framework for recovery.  Following are estimated component costs of cover crops and additions of organic materials recommendations that planners should use as a framework when working with producers to reclaim their soil quality.

1.      Adding Organic Material

a.      Liquid Hog Manure (3000 gallons/acre)

                                                               i.      If manure must be purchased = $20.00/acre (based on nutrient value of the manure)

                                                             ii.      If manure must be hauled from a distance = $0.01/gallon * 3000 gallons/acre = $30.00/acre

                                                            iii.      Manure application = $0.0125/gallon * 3000 gallons/acre = $37.50/acre

b.      Compost (2 tons/acre)

                                                               i.      If compost must be purchased = $30/ton * 2 tons/acre = $60.00/acre

                                                             ii.      If compost must be hauled from a distance = $15/ton * 2 tons/acre = $30.00/acre

                                                            iii.      Compost application = $20/ton * 2 tons/acre = $40.00/acre

2.      Cover Crop

a.      Winter Kill Varieties (Brassicas, Oats, etc.)

                                                              i.      $45.00/acre (includes seed cost and drill or aerial seeding operation)

b.      Winter Surviving Varieties (Wheat, Cereal Ryes, Ryegrasses, legumes etc.)

                                                              i.      $60.00/acre (includes seed cost and drill or aerial seeding operation + $15/acre for spring herbicide application)
