INDIANA BULLETIN NO. IN450-9-1

SUBJECT:  TCH – Indiana Guide Sheet - Cover Crops to Improve Soil in Prevented Planting Fields

Purpose:  To notify Field Offices of the Indiana Guide Sheet - Cover Crops to Improve Soil in Prevented Planting Fields.

Expiration Date:  September 30, 2009

Some Indiana producers are faced with not planting some of their fields due to weather and other factors this crop year.  Not only will these producers need to consider their programmatic (i.e. Highly Erodible Land Conservation) and insurance options for their prevented planting acres, but they must also address their agronomic and long-term soil quality factors as well.  One of the key components toward maintaining and improving soil quality during this crop year is to include cover crops into their management systems.

Attached is an Indiana Guide Sheet - Cover Crops to Improve Soil in Prevented Planting Fields that provides information about cover crops options.

In the short term, this Guide Sheet is available to assist producers and planners with their general technical assistance and Highly Erodible Land Conservation requests. It will later be converted into an NRCS Indiana Technical Note and stored permanently with other Technical Notes.

Please ensure to direct producers to FSA or their insurance handler for specific determinations on managing cover crops for harvest.

Please direct all questions related to this bulletin to Barry Fisher, State Agronomist, at (317) 290-3200 ext. 350.
