Description of Watershed

The total estimated area of the watershed in Indiana covers 718,412 acres.  This watershed is located in southwest Indiana in Clay, Greene, Knox, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties; as well as portions of Vermilion, Edgar, Clark, Crawford, and Lawrence counties in Illinois.

The watershed area is a combination of Illinois and Iowa Deep Loess and Drift, and the Central Mississippi Valley Wooded Slopes resource areas in the eastern parts; Indiana and Ohio Till Plain and Southern Illinois Thin Loess and Till Plain resource areas in the western parts.  The topography ranges from steep dissected valley and hills to level upland, outwash plains, and flood plains throughout.  The soils range from moderately deep/very deep silt soils to sand soils throughout.

 

Land/Use

 The land uses in this watershed consist of cropland, irrigated cropland, pastureland, woodland, and surface mining.There are 1,199 farms in the Indiana portion of the watershed, covering about 435,921 acres.  The average farm size is 370 acres with the average in Greene, Clay, and Vigo counties under 300 acres; and Knox and Vermillion averages 591 and 497 acres respectively.  Primary crops include corn, soybeans, wheat, confined livestock (hogs and dairy), and some cattle and sheep on pasture.
