Tippecanoe Watershed

 November 2004                                    Farmer Informational Meetings!

                                                                             Tippecanoe Watershed

Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the watershed covers 1,246,842 acres.  This watershed is located in northwest Indiana in Benton, Carroll, Cass, Fulton, Jasper, Kosciusko, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Pulaski, Starke, Tippecanoe, White, and Whitley counties.

The watershed area is a combination of Southern Michigan and Northern Indiana Drift Plain, and Indiana and Ohio Till Plain resource areas.  The topography ranges from broad level glaciated plain in the northwest and steep dissected valley and hills to level glaciated till plain, outwash plains, and flood plains in the southwest, southeast, and the central parts. The soils range from moderately deep/very deep silt soils to coarse soils throughout.  The upper end of this watershed, in Kosciusko, Whitley, and Noble counties, is in the heart of a natural lakes region in northeast Indiana.  Some soils in the lakes region are porous and most soils in the watershed have a seasonal high water table.

Land Use

The land uses in this watershed consist of cropland, irrigated cropland, and pasture-land. There are 3,053 Indiana farms in the watershed, covering about 974,024 acres.  The average farm size is 300 acres, ranging from an average of 630 acres in Benton County to 170 acres average in Noble County.  Primary crops include corn, soybeans, confined livestock (hogs and ducks), and some livestock on pasture.
