Upper Maumee Watershed

November 2004                                Farmer Informational Meetings!

                                                                       Upper Maumee Watershed

 Description of Watershed

The total estimated area of the watershed covers 128,812 acres in Indiana and 121,852 acres in Ohio.  This watershed is located in northeast Indiana in Allen and DeKalb counties, and northwest Ohio in Defiance and Paulding counties.

The watershed area is a combination of Erie-Huron Lake Plain and the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain resource areas.  The topography ranges from gently sloping glacial till plain, broken in place by hilly moraines, kames, and outwash terraces in the west and the southern parts, and nearly level broad lake plains with some beach ridges and lower moraines in the northeast and central parts.  The soils are deep and range from clay soils to coarse soils throughout.

Land/Use

Land uses of farms in this watershed consist of cropland, irrigated cropland, and pastureland. There are 494 Indiana farms in the watershed, covering about 88,129 acres; and 407 Ohio farms covering about 111,873 acres.  The average size farm is 180 acres in Indiana and 275 acres in Ohio.  The watershed covers about 30 percent of northeast Allen County reaching into the city of Fort Wayne, and about 3,925 acres in the southeast corner of DeKalb County.  Primary crops include corn, soybeans, wheat, confined livestock (hogs), and some beef cattle.
